Year 1
Spring 2
Writing
This half terms learning journey will continue to focus on the concept of creativity in writing composition. Now that the children can use a range of sentence structures effectively, they will learn about different sentence types (statements, questions and exclamations). They will learn how to correctly punctuate statements, question and exclamation before focussing on how to create an effective balance in using them within a piece of creative writing. Throughout the half term the children will also learn about the genres and purposes of different texts such as non- fiction information text, information poster, letters and narratives. This will teach the children the differences in writing style in order for them to independently choose an appropriate style to write in.
Maths
This half term the children will revisit their addition and subtraction learning. This includes learning about how they can have three numbers in an addition number sentence and that these numbers can be put in any order and the total will stay the same. They will learn how to partition bigger numbers and write addition and subtraction sentences from these. The children will then begin their learning journey on time. they will learn how to describe time in hours, minutes and seconds.
Reading
During this learning journey the children will learn to check that texts they have read and text read by others make sense. The children will learn how to correct inaccurate reading by re-reading when necessary. They will also learn to discuss the significance of a title of a book, and the significance of key events in a text. The children will learn to ask and answer questions about what has been read to them and about what they have read.
Science
This half term the children will continue their learning about animals but now focusing on animals’ diets. The children will learn the knowledge about carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. They will learn what each group of animals eat. The children will then finish their biology learning journey by investigating the human body in the context of health and hygiene during an expedition. They will identify, name, draw and label parts of the human body and learn which body part is associated with each of the five senses.
Geography
This half term the children will continue investigating places, on an even larger, global scale. They are learning to identify the location of hot and cold areas of the world. They will discuss which continents the equator passes through and use this to think about the different weather that will be in that area.
History
The children will continue interpreting evidence by learning to understand the ways that we can find out about the past. They will learn to ask and answer questions, choosing and using parts of stories and other sources to demonstrate their knowledge. We will focus on using knowledge organisers, PowerPoints, information texts, fact files and stories to build their understanding about Jacques Cousteau (an ocean photographer) and his accomplishments.
Art
In Art the children will use shape and colour to create landscape pictures inspired by artists’ David Hockney and Etel Adnan who they learnt about last half term. They began by copying a picture from one of these artists and then they created their own landscape pictures. The children then answered questions to evaluate their own art piece.
DT
The children will learn to design and create a bridge. Last half term they learnt what a bridge needs to be stable, sturdy and strong. Then they used their designs to build a bridge that was strong enough to hold a toy car. The children then evaluated their bridges by thinking about what they would change and what they liked about tehir bridges.
Music
In music this half term the children will be using percussion instruments to create different beats. They will also take part in our African drumming sessions to prepare themselves for the performance. They will listen to beats and copy them back.
Computing
This half term the children will learn how to programme beebots to get them to reach a destination. The children will use the ipads to work on the beebots app to learn how to programme them. They will then use the actual beebots on mats to programme them.
RE
Our topic for RE this half term in welcoming. The children will begin by thinking about how they feel when they are welcomed and ways we can show to others that they are welcome. The children will learn about the Easter story and Palm Sunday. When learning about the story they will discover how Jesus was welcomed by Christians.
RSHE
This half term children will focus on learning about rights and respect. Children will begin by thinking about behaviours and how different behaviours don’t only affect them but how it can affect others around them. Then they will think about their school and home environment. Thinking about their favourite parts of the environments and how they can look after these by showing respect for the things they are responsible for.
PE
In PE the children will be focusing on the creative cog in their learning journey. They will show how they can move creatively while developing both coordination (ball skills) and balance. They will also be learning netball. Within this they will learn throwing and catching skills.
